HISTORY
OF VESCO GROUP

60 years

of experience and improvement

Our future is being created every day. Every project we undertake, every challenge we overcome, every collaboration with the community, every satisfied partner, and every employee’s success all become part of the shared legacy of the VESCO Group of companies.

Our journey began more than 60 years ago, in the last century, when industrial enterprises began extracting clay in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Those early efforts paved the way for today’s VESCO Group: a global business powered by over 600 professionals in Ukraine, Spain, Italy, Romania, and Serbia.

Building on decades of experience and expertise in ceramic raw material extraction, we continually improve our production processes to provide future generations with resources that enhance comfort and contribute to a sustainable society.

BACKGROUND

The history of the VESCO Group of companies began even before its official birth. Clay mining in eastern Ukraine began as early as the end of the 18th century.

In the middle of the 20th century, a number of enterprises in the Ukrainian Donbas, which would later become part of the international VESCO Group, began the active development of industrial clay mining.

In 1959, the “Chasiv-Yar Refractory Products Plant” (later “Chasiv-Yar Refractory Plant”) was created by merging the “Ordzhonikidze Plant” and the “Chasiv-Yar Rudoupravlinnya” into a single enterprise.

In 1961, “Druzhkivske Rudoupravlinnya” was formed, which included the Novoraisky and Veselovsky refractory clay mines, as well as the Bantyshevsky molding sand mine.

In 1967, the Veselovsky mine enterprise was established, which separated from Druzhkivske Rudoupravlinnya. In 1994, the enterprise was renamed “Vesco,” which would later become the foundation of the international brand: VESCO.

Each enterprise supplied raw materials to factories and plants in light industry, porcelain, ceramics, glass, radio engineering, and other sectors of the national economy. In the 1980s, “Druzhkivske Rudoupravlinnya” became one of the founders of the restoration (reclamation) of land disturbed by mining operations in the Donetsk region.

The search for the best methods and technologies for extracting raw materials over the years has enabled the clay mining enterprises of the VESCO group of companies to accumulate experience and develop effective approaches that continue to benefit the VESCO Group to this day.

CONSOLIDATION FOR GROWTH

In 2006, SCM, the largest investment group in Ukraine, became the main shareholder and began to consolidate the clay mining enterprises of the Donetsk region, merging the “Vesko,” “Druzhkivske Rudoupravlinnya,” and “Ogneupornerud” enterprises into a single group operating with a unified business strategy. This consolidation enabled the previously disparate enterprises to begin working together and sharing years of expertise.
To effectively manage these assets, SCM created the United Minerals Group, which later transformed into the UMGI investment company. This synergy between experienced professionals has enabled the group to double its coverage of the European market within two years after its merger, supplying ceramic raw materials to 20 countries worldwide.

The team continued to develop its strategy and approaches. Since 2012, all overburden operations have been performed in-house to ensure stable mining performance. This marked the point at which corporate responsibility was embedded into the business strategy, with enterprises transitioning from ad hoc charity to structured social investment in their local communities. The first social partnership agreements were signed.

We also placed a strong emphasis on advancing technologies, enabling us to deliver innovative solutions to our partners and expand our market reach. In 2014, more than 1.8 million euros were invested in the group’s measurement laboratory, which elevated research to a new level by examining clay composition and altering linear dimensions during drying and firing.

A BUSINESS BUILT ON VALUES AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

In 2017, the clay mining group was established as an independent business with its own corporate governance, united under the single VESCO brand, which represents the entire product portfolio. Later, it reinforced its position in the international market and solidified the Group’s identity as a unified VESCO Group of companies.

In the same year, the Group achieved strong results, with sales volumes exceeding 3 million tons across 27 countries worldwide. As one of the leading suppliers of ceramic raw materials, VESCO Group is increasingly focusing on strengthening its product portfolio and anticipating the changing needs of its customers. The laboratory equipment has been upgraded to enhance ceramic manufacturers’ ability to find the best solutions and types of ceramic raw materials, ensuring consistent product quality. Consumers no longer need to invest in additional research to develop technological solutions or adapt ceramic masses for specific product properties. This work is now handled by the Group’s specialists and advanced equipment.

How business is conducted is increasingly important to the Group: responsible and ethical stakeholder behavior is embedded in all business processes.
Since the Group’s development in 2019, the VESCO Group Code of Corporate Ethics has been in place, setting out our mission, vision, and corporate values that guide daily activities. It fosters a shared understanding of the ethical principles underpinning our work.

NEW TRANSFORMATION — INTERNATIONAL VESCO GROUP OF COMPANIES

In 2019, VESCO Group developed a ten-year development strategy, which planned the expansion of production outside of Ukraine.

This would greatly expand our ability to create customized ceramic mix solutions—the Group’s core product today. That year, we expanded into Italy and Spain with our first subsidiaries and dedicated distribution channels, strategically serving ceramic tile producers who have long been key consumers of VESCO raw materials. This marked the beginning of the transformation of a Ukrainian business into the international VESCO Group of companies. VESCO Group’s strategy now focuses on organic business growth. The Group began actively exploring opportunities to establish production in the European region. In the same year, VESCO Group broadened its clay portfolio by expanding the varietal composition and introducing new brands to the international market, while also acquiring a majority stake in JSC “Chasiv-Yar Refractory Plant” in Ukraine.

Thanks to investments in its quality system, resource base, and diverse product portfolio, VESCO Group increased sales in 2021 to over 3.5 million tons across 25 countries worldwide.

In 2022, production volumes at VESCO Group’s Ukrainian enterprises declined significantly due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But despite the challenges, the group promptly implemented new logistics solutions and ensured the fulfillment of 100% of customer orders.
In the same year, VESCO Group launched its own production of ceramic mixes in the Spanish port of Castellon. The mixing complex enables the combination of raw materials according to customer needs, supporting growth in finished products while maintaining high quality and consistent clay characteristics.

In 2022, VESCO expanded its global footprint by opening a second Technology Center in Andorra, Spain, establishing an R&D hub to support international partners. The hub’s main tasks include conducting exploration and geological work for sustainable production, performing qualitative analysis of raw materials, and developing new formulation solutions for ceramic manufacturers.

In 2023, VESCO Group continued to actively expand its international presence. In Romania and Serbia, VESCO Balkans companies have been established, which are currently exploring the possibility of setting up production facilities. The Spanish subsidiary VESCO Clays Spain has started developing a clay quarry at the Encarnitau field in the province of Teruel.
Since Spain is one of Europe’s largest ceramic tile producers and a key market for VESCO Group, it was a logical choice for launching raw material production within the EU.

We continually seek opportunities for improvement and growth to stay closer to our customers and provide them with the best solutions for using ceramic raw materials in a sustainable subsurface environment. With decades of experience and expertise, the international VESCO Group continues to build a prosperous, innovative, and sustainable future for generations to come.
